One of those classic cases where the 6-year old is smarter and more responsible than the parent.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - A Monroeville woman has been taken into custody after her 6-year-old son found a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his school backpack this morning at Ramsey Elementary.
Police said the boy immediately notified his kindergarten teacher who then contacted authorities.
"He did the correct thing," Monroeville police Chief Doug Cole said of the child.
No one was injured.
Monroeville police subsequently searched an apartment in their municipality and took the boy's mother, Stephanie Lynn Roth, into custody. Chief Cole said Ms. Roth was charged with recklessly endangering another person, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of drug paraphernalia. All the charges are misdemeanors
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said his office also will consider filing a dependency petition to ensure that the child's well-being is evaluated.
Once the teacher was made aware of the gun, a school resource officer who typically works out of the high school immediately came to the elementary school.
As a precaution, Gateway Superintendent Nina Zetty has now banned backpacks in kindergarten through fourth grade until the end of this school year. The issue will be revisited before the fall.
Have to love the heads-up play by the son here notifying his teacher about the loaded death machine popping out of his backpack. Gonna be honest I'm not sure what I would even be thinking if I found a gun in my backpack in kindergarten. With all of the stories these days of kids deliberately coming into schools with loaded guns and harmful intents, it just drives me batshit crazy to see this mother put the entire school in danger like that. Let's hope that little Johnny Roth grows up and learns from his mother's shameful mistake.
P.S. The balls on Superintendent Nina Zetty for banning backpacks for the entire school for the rest of the year. How the hell are kids supposed to carry around their book socks, Lunchables, and Yoo-Hoos? C'mon Zetty!
